Getting to Know the Feelings That Make Me, Me
Bear is supposed to be having a wonderful day. The forest's annual games are finally here, the sunshine is warm, and Deer has planned all their favorite activities. But something feels strange. Bear doesn't want to race, the cheering seems too loud, and even his favorite game doesn't make him smile. When Deer asks what's wrong, Bear doesn't know what to say. He's not exactly sad, but he's not happy either. He's excited to be there, yet somehow he wishes he could be somewhere quiet. How can so many different feelings fit inside one Bear?
The Weather Under My Fur explores the sometimes confusing experience of understanding our own emotions. With Deer's gentle encouragement, Bear begins paying attention to what he's feeling, what his body is telling him, and why certain moments make him uncomfortable. He realizes that while he loves spending time with his friend, the noise and excitement of the games have become overwhelming. He also discovers that he can feel happy about being invited and still need a little time to himself. As Bear begins putting words to his feelings, something that once seemed confusing starts to make much more sense.
Using the changing weather as a gentle metaphor for our inner emotional world, the story helps children build a deeper understanding of themselves. It introduces self-awareness through recognizing emotions, noticing personal preferences, and understanding how different situations affect the way we feel. Rather than suggesting that every uncomfortable feeling needs to be fixed, Bear's experience encourages children to become curious about their emotions, accept that feelings can be complicated, and communicate what they need with greater confidence and clarity.
