Bear always knows exactly what to do. He knows which berries to pick, where to find the softest grass, and which path leads to the perfect picnic spot. Whenever Rabbit goes on an outing with him, there's hardly a decision left to make. But this week, Rabbit has an idea. What if she plans the entire picnic herself? Bear happily agrees, and Rabbit sets off with an empty basket and a head full of possibilities. Only now, every little thing seems to need a decision. Should she bring apples or berries? Find a sunny clearing or a shady tree? Pack everything at once or make two trips? Perhaps letting Bear decide was easier after all.

One Basket, a Hundred Choices follows Rabbit as she discovers the excitement and uncertainty of doing something independently for the first time. At first, she wishes Bear would simply tell her what to do. But as she begins making her own choices, solving little problems, and trusting her judgment, Rabbit finds herself enjoying the experience. Not every decision works out perfectly, and she still needs Bear's help carrying a particularly heavy basket. But by the time they settle down for their picnic, Rabbit realizes something wonderful: she planned this adventure herself, and it feels special because of the choices she made along the way.

Through a familiar everyday activity filled with small decisions and unexpected discoveries, the book introduces independence as a skill that grows through practice. It encourages children to think for themselves, take initiative, and develop confidence in their ability to make age-appropriate choices. Rabbit's experience also shows that becoming independent doesn't mean doing everything alone or refusing help.
